Messin' Around
Song Stories & Tunings

Title: Underdog
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: Have you ever felt like you just can't catch a break? I was feeling like I must certainly be an underdog while writing this song.

Title: Spring Forward Fall Back
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: This song was written just before the Day Light Savings time change. There is a well known cycle that musicians experience as they become proficient, and I thought this mnemonic was a great way of explaining how it feels.

Title: Ups And Downs
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: A recognition of the roller coaster ride we call life. Also the patterns used in constructing the song (it has lots of slides and is played up and down the neck).

Title: A Tear At A Time
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: This was written during a time of healing and of realization. The title was an attempt to capture the moment and fit the song's premise that the sadness wasn't something that could be easily forgotten or overcome. It would have to mend a tear at a time.

Title: Us
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: This was the first fingerstyle song I ever wrote. I bounced lots of ideas off of my wife and she helped me arrange it. Since we both worked on it, Us was the perfect title!

Title: Hootenanny
Tuning: DADGAD
Story: Hootenanny is a word my Mom used to say now and then. I had been searching for a title for this song for quite sometime when I finally broke the American Slang dictionary out and started looking for cool words. Well, when I came across hootenanny, I knew that was the title. It is a word that you use when you don't know what to call something.
